"UNITED STATES - New Telephone Scam Targets US Foreign Nationals
Aug. 21, 2013 - USCIS
(U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) has alerted the public of a new scam that is targeting and potentially
victimizing foreign nationals in the U.S. USCIS has advised that
scammers are posing as USCIS officials, and are requesting personal
information such as social security numbers, passport numbers and A
numbers. The caller then indicates that there is an issue with the
record, and requests payment to correct it. USCIS advises that if such a
phone call is received, the foreign national should hang up
immediately. As a reminder, USCIS cautions that its representatives
never ask for payment or personal information over the phone, and that
such details should not be provided. Foreign nationals who receive such
calls should report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission at https://www. ftccomplaintassistant.gov, or to the appropriate state authority.
BAL Comment: Clients
should be aware that their own employees may be receiving such calls.
Employees should be aware that USCIS does not contact individuals this
way, and that they should not provide any information or payment to
anyone over the phone. The employee should report any such experience to
appropriate law enforcement authorities such as the FBI and the Federal
Trade Commission Bureau of Consumer Protection.
